The best sample packs this week include an expertly sampled gypsy fiddle, the darkest of harpsichords, funky sounds from the 80s synth era, and some film scores that are all out intense. Let’s check ’em out!
Red Room Audio Traveler Series Gypsy Fiddle
Gypsy fiddle is a style unto itself and Red Room Audio more than did this unique instrument justice with this sample set. All parts were recorded by a renowned Bulgarian violinist in a professional studio in order to best capture the spirit and nuances of the fiddle. There are controls for dynamics, width, and timbre with more than 10,500 samples that come with multiple articulations, phrases, and fiddle techniques. This provides the utmost realism via Total Articulation Control Technology. It runs only in Kontakt 5.8.1 or later, but this is a stellar sample kit. At only $89 it’s unique enough to be worth looking into.
Electronik Sound Lab Daksichord 2
There is an eerie nobility to the sounds available in this sample pack. Each selection is comprised of three layered sounds with individual controls over each one. Controls provide manipulation of the texture and sub frequencies, and the instrument itself can be dialed in with attack/release controls, LFOs, and reverb. The sounds do have a bit of a “sample” feel to them, but it works with the motif of the plug-in. Darksichord 2 is available for 64/32-bit Windows and Mac systems in VST/3, AU plug-in formats. It’s donationware, meaning you can name your own price.
Industrial Strength 80s Synth Funk
Sounds that helped to define an era are available in this synth funk sample pack that is bursting with mid-late 80s vibe. In total it includes samples of synth bass/pads/leads, drum shots, guitars, arpeggios and more across eight total production kits. The sounds come in .WAV format, with MIDI available for a few of them as well. The sample set can be used with some of the company’s other plug-ins to increase the amount of production options. It’s available at Loopmasters for just $32.48.
Thick Sounds Intense Film Score
This is a great, versatile set of samples that are perfect for breaking into film sound design. Everything included offers enough variety for use in multiple genres and from features to trailers. Samples include drums, synths, percussion, pads, and more. Also included are bonus loops and samples ranging in BPM of 71 to 140. There are 10 kits with separate layers for creating quiet moments or heat-of-the-moment scenes. The sounds are modern and professional sounding. The entire pack is just $39, so if you’re looking for some new sound design samples, or a single pack to get you creating, definitely give it a listen.
