Audified Linda RockStack: A new virtual amp and cabinet for your DAW

Audified Linda RockStackAudified’s latest plug-in, the Linda RockStack, was designed with musician, mixing and mastering expert, and programmer, Martin Linda. The virtual amp draws on Martin’s long-time use of various simulations and impulse responses, and is made to his dream specifications. With its very rock and metal slant, it could be the perfect virtual amp for all your monster riffs.

Audified Linda RockStack

The Audified Linda RockStack plug-in does not simulate or emulate any well-known brand or specific amp. It is, instead, a purely virtual affair. Specifically, it is a 3-channel amplifier with individually switchable effects and a section with IRs-based cab simulation. You can also blend two impulse responses for that virtual speaker cabinet, a useful feature when building guitar tones.

Rock & Metal

The basic amp sound is provided by the three channels, clean, rock and metal. Each channel has its own distinct sound character. The contour section has controls for Tight, Fat and Body which you can tweak to taste. There is also a built-in equalizer that you can use either in front of or behind the amp gain section. For effects you get a multi-stage chorus and a delay to add some depth and width to your core amp sound.

The two bright switches help tailor the top end, and a noise gate keeps the hiss at bay, which should come in handy on those higher gain rock/metal channels. Each of the individual modules can be switched off so that you can use your own IRs or effects to easily integrate the Linda RockStack into your virtual rig.

Specification and Introductory price

Audified Linda RockStack runs as VST2, AU and AAX on macOS (10.11 to 10.15) and Windows (7 to 10). On the Mac it only runs in 64 bit, whereas on PC it works as VST in 32 and 64 bit formats. There is also a free demo version available on the manufacturer’s website, in case you want to take it for test ride before you part with any money.

RRP – Available for an introductory price of USD 29 US dollars until January 13, 2021, after which you pay USD 49

INSPIRATA: Has Inspired Acoustics reinvented convolution reverb?

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATAInspired Acoustics has chosen some big words to describe INSPIRATA, its new convolution reverb plug-in. The developer calls INSPIRATA “the ultimate next-generation immersive reverb workstation”. For a limited time, the Lite version is available for free. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA

According to the developer, INSPIRATA is the result of many years of research, with the goal to “create a shockingly realistic and immersive sound experience”. At its core, it’s a convolution reverb that uses samples of real acoustic spaces. The library contains everything from famous concert halls and churches to clubs, airports, offices, garages and various small rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms. Depending on which version of INSPIRATA you choose, it currently measures up to 135 GB in size. You can further adjust the acoustic characteristics of the spaces using parameters like decay, width, distance and purity.

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA

So what sets INSPIRATA apart from other convolution reverbs? INSPIRATA focuses heavily on giving you a great deal of control over the positioning of the sound sources in the virtual space. Depending on the version, you can place multiple sound sources in the space and move them around. The listener position can also be adjusted. The developer says that this lets you work as if you were physically present in the room, looking for the sweet spot.

These positions can also be automated, and this is where it gets interesting. According to Inspired Acoustics, you can automate the movement of sound sources and the listener position, and the sound will follow smoothly, without artifacts. This lets you get creative with spatial positioning in a number of ways, not just in music production, but also in post production and cinematic mixing.

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA

Sound sources can be positioned freely

Up to 22.2 surround sound

The stereo realm doesn’t really do this concept justice, so the larger two of the four editions of INSPIRATA are surround capable. INSPIRATA Professional Edition supports multichannel output options up to a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration. The full-blown INSPIRATA Immersive Edition can do everything up to 22.2 surround sound.

I’m always skeptical when a developer uses words like “ultimate”, “revolutionary” and “for the first time in history”. But the attention to detail and level of control is certainly impressive. If you’re serious about your reverbs, I think it’s definitely worth checking out. And with the Lite Edition being available free of charge for a limited time, there’s really no reason not to.

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA

The advanced editions let you map inputs to sound sources

Price and compatibility

Inspired Acoustics INSPIRATA comes in four editions with different feature sets. The main differences are in the size of the library, the maximum number of sound sources and the surround capabilities. You can find a comparison table on the developer’s website. The prices are as follows:

  • Lite Edition (stereo version with 9 GB library): free for a limited time
  • Personal Edition (stereo version with 135 GB library): USD 199
  • Professional Edition (135 GB library, up to 7.1.2): USD 599
  • Immersive Edition (135 GB library, up to 22.2): USD 1899

INSPIRATA requires macOS 10.11 or higher or Windows 10 or higher. It’s available in VST3, AAX and AU formats (64 bit). The various editions have different CPU and RAM requirements, which you can find on the developer’s website. An iLok account is required for authorization.

ST-62 VW Electric Guitar

The ST-62 is Harley Benton’s take on a classic design with two cutaways and three single-coil pickups. This is a great workhorse guitar, a reliable little instrument to have at home if you fancy a quick jam session, or for rehearsals. And yes, the sound and playability is easily good enough to gig with. Canadian maple neck, Kluson-style tuners and synchronised tremolo, nice Vintage White finish that complements the tortoiseshell pickguard. The customer reviews on this model give it 4.6/5, so Harley Benton must be doing a lot right with this guitar. Find out more here.

HB-40R 40-Watt Combo Amp

Harley Benton certainly knows how to make some reliable gear that stays the course and does what it’s told. The HB-40R has been around since 2001, providing beginners and practised guitarists alike with a sturdy 40W combo that’s ideal for rehearsals or home practise using the headphone output. With 40W on tap, you’ve got enough power to make yourself heard even when your drummer has had a Red Bull too many. Two channels, tube emulation circuit, spring reverb, AUX in, Line out – you can’t go wrong with this. Find out more here.

Vintage Overdrive Pedal

Another bit of immensely useful, robust Harley Benton gear that does the job. And then some. Its vintage-style drive tones have plenty of character and growl. Use this to add more heft and cohesion to your sound at lower settings or dime it for some full-on 70s-style OD. Drive, Volume and Tone give you all the control you need. And seriously, who doesn’t need another good-sounding overdrive pedal? Over 1000 customer reviews on Thomann give it 4.5/5 on average. Find out more here.
