What has been a real issue on SoundCloud is now an issue on Spotify. I know that all the producers and labels are happy when I showcase their music on my shows. This system is broken and dysfunctional. Music that gets promoted via podcasts and radio shows gets blocked by a flawed copyright monitoring system. It’s not humans that make those individual decisions, it’s algorithms.

Worry not, the podcast and its individual shows is still available on SoundCloud, MIXCLOUD and via RSS feed:

 

Dear Spotify, if you read this: the entire fucking point of a DJ mix is the DJ playing records of other people. That promotes the record, the artist and the label. This is how underground electronic music works. I can’t believe I have to explain this to the world’s biggest music streaming company. You wanted podcasts, you get podcasts. Now, you kick the podcasts of DJs like me. This is ridiculous.

P.S.: The system is very slow. It took them around 2 months to find out that I promote other people’s music on my podcast, which is the entire point of playing and recording DJ sets and making them available as podcasts.

The LIGHTS OUT Podcast

Ingo Vogelmann PodcastOkay peeps, I have some good news for you. No, unfortunately I have not developed a vaccine. But something that makes life a little sweeter, especially in these times.

The first big thing: the LIGHTS OUT Podcast on Spotify!

It consists of all my DJ sets, both LIGHTWORKS and TIME OUT and all guest or live sets or radio shows. All-in-one, so to speak.

All the material is also on SoundCloud, but that’s less cool (but downloadable), but listening comfortably on Spotify alongside all the other stuff that’s up your alley on an every day basis is a completely different story. And I think it’s a much better one. You can also listen to everything conveniently offline.

Next topic: this isn’t supposed to be the only podcast. My dear friend Jakob (Addliss) and I are thinking about a “Chit Chat Podcast” (this is not the exact title, more a description). It’s not supposed to be thematic, but rather just random conversation.

And then I’m planning another podcast. Purely music-related, music theory, experience, knowledge, technology, etc., and possibly also guest interviews.

“What the…?” you might think. This is the deal:

I (very) often get asked why I throw all my favorite music into one playlist, which would be this one: ingovogelmann.net/ivmc (“Ingo Vogelmann’s Medicine Cabinet”). Because most of you either like electronic music or hand-made music (like neo-classic, rock etc.), which I personally both like the same, along with a huge plethora of other music. That playlist is what I personally listen to most of the time I listen to music. I’m not very narrow-minded when it comes to music, and other things. There’s beauty in a lot of things out there.

Now, with the new playlists you can choose for yourself, at least between the dance and the chilled side of things (I might add playlist for rock or neo-classic and other genres in the future). Plus, the tracks featured in the new playlists are almost exactly what I would and do play on my LIGHTWORKS and TIME OUT shows/podcasts (if you like to call it that, or whatever), minus the unreleased promos, of course.

A Little Personal Update

It may be time to catch up on a few things…

I decided to stop broadcasting my shows on radio stations. The time commitments limit me too much in my personal freedom, and the unreliability of the stations annoys me too much.

I will record LIGHTWORKS and TIME OUT sets (and other specials) whenever I feel like it and my time permits. I will then, as always, offer those for free download on Soundcloud.

As a touring DJ, I am not very active, but still accept “good” booking requests. That means you can still book me, but I’m not running after any gig. Honestly, I’m just picking out the sweetest fruits. I’m tired of lying and cheating promoters and bad marketing because someone does not understand this job.

Please do not get me wrong … I’m not one of those who announce big on social media that they’re giving up the DJ job. Once a DJ, always a DJ. And also: never say never. I love DJing and I love to play for an audience that understands and loves what I do.

Mark my words: that will never end, until my last breath.

But I do not feel like having to get upset about people in this business anymore. I am too old for such nonsense, and too young not to enjoy certain things in a different and better way.

The music business has given me a lot and taken a lot. I have never taken the easy route and I have renounced or thrown away money because I am (still) an idealist. But I have not always kept up well with my energies, have had too much patience with assholes and bunglers. Too often people have taken advantage of the benefits associated with me without even considering giving anything back. I have always put too much faith in the wrong people, that’s been one of my life-long weaknesses.

All that has come to an end.

I will stay with you forever as a musician, composer, producer, storyteller, part-time idiot, puppet master, occasional DJ, show host and smartass. Promised.

On Instagram you can have a peek into what adventures are taking place in my life. I still have endless energy, plans and dreams. Nothing (except perhaps death) will keep me from realizing my ideas. No matter what obstacles have stood in my way: I have the partner by my side whom I always wanted to have, I live where I always wanted to live, and in the future I will only do what I really want to do. Nothing and no one will stop me. Well, maybe here and there, for a moment… but in the end I always reach my goals. Because I know who I am and who I’m not, thus I have plenty of substance to believe in myself.

Where my fans come from (2017), and how it reflects on gigs

As you might know, I do some analysis from time to time. Here’s the Top 10 of where my fans come from, and a few comments from myself to it:

1 Germany β€” Actually surprising.

2 Hungary β€” Not surprising at all, just played 5 gigs in 1 week there. Hungarians have and incredible connection to the music I love (and do).

3 United States of America β€” Very surprising, in a way. Getting gigs in the US is really difficult (for me). Promoters aren’t willing to take risks and pay decently. Probably the country is also just geographically too big to get folks attending a gig with a dude like me, although I had great gigs in L.A. and Philadelphia already.

4 Argentina β€” Comparable to the people in Hungary, just 18 hours more flight, and 1000 € more flight costs, so I get relatively many booking requests that unfortunately seldom work out. But, believe it or not, we’re working on a (realistic) mini tour right now, as we speak. If all goes well I’m touring Argentina in July 2017. πŸ™‚

5 United Kingdom β€” Been booked there once in my life. But hey: also in talks for a gig in London right now as well. If all goes well: July 2017!

6 Turkey β€” Oh my… I receive hundreds of booking requests from Turkey every year, and it NEVER worked out. Musically Turks have the same affection for my stuff as the Hungarians and Argentinians do, but for some reason we can’t work out gigs. I don’t get it. MANY requests, no outcome. What a pity. :-/ I hope this changes ASAP.

7 Greece β€” See above (Turkey). Many requests, not much outcome. And boy, do I LOVE Greece! In fact, I’m planning my vacation for this year in Greece right now. Love the people, the food, the culture…. everything. And I know Greeks party hard, as if there was no tomorrow. πŸ™‚

8 Mexico β€” A bit like Argentina. Far away, but people are absolutely crazy about my music. I remember having had a huge article in Mexico’s biggest newspaper back in 2003 when I released my first artist album, which was signed to EMI β€” a major label, imagine that! The big press was due to a Spanish journalist who spotted me because of the major label deal and interviewed me (for the German press, haha), but I was living in Spain back then. Anyway, I’d love to come to Mexico, of course. πŸ˜‰

9 Bulgaria β€” I think it’s like Turkey, plus, I heard my fee is a general problem in Bulgaria, which β€” I heard as well β€” has the lowest average income in Europe. Pity. πŸ™

10 Romania β€” Can’t say much about this, to be honest, just: I’d love to play in Romania! I have a good friend from Romania that happens to be a great promoter! In Malaysia, LOL. Hi Daniela! πŸ˜‰

Okay guys, that’s it for now. You see, it’s not all doom and gloom. It’s not me who doesn’t wanna play in your country or so. There are mostly obstacles I can’t do much about.
