Stacked sounds and MIDI mapping hurdles in SSD5 (or SSD5.5) when creating an own drum kit

Let’s face two facts:

  1. Steven Slate Drums, especially the new SDD5.5, simply sound fucking great, out of the box.
  2. The MIDI mapping, especially the “stacking issue”, is a pain in the ass.

When it comes to point 2 I had a conversation with the support. Remarkable: I never got a quicker support reply. What leaves me in mixed emotions is the content of it. Here’s my message:

I can’t seem to find the “Input Converter” in SSD5.5. I’d love to keep the mapping for every kit loaded, so that I can switch between drum sets, but keep the samples where they were.

Then I can’t figure out how to “unstack” samples… well, in all honesty: why do they get stacked by default in the first place? Would be great if they’d get somewhat logically mapped to their own MIDI notes (like a second kick drum close to the 1st one etc.). It’s very inconvenient to have a second hi-hat placed 3 octaves above the first one. That makes drum programming a nightmare.

I want to build a huge drum set with 2 different kick drums, 2 different hi-hats etc., and not run 2 instances of SSD5.5 in one project, just to be able to have this.

I know, I can assign every single sample to another note (MIDI Learn), but to do all of this by hand is, as mentioned, a nightmare.

Also, what’s the difference between “User (not loaded)” and “Reserved (not loaded)”, and what happens when I put, say, a kick drum on a “Bell left (not loaded)”? Will the left bell WHEN LOADED then stack up with the kick drum?

As said, I want to build a huge drum kit with all the samples I have in mind, but right now mapping issues stand in the way.

Here’s the reply:

Hi,

please note SSD5.5 offers MIDI learn in two different locations, the mapping section, which can be accessed by first clicking on the “Map” Tab, on the left side of SSD 5, and the articulation switching which can be accessed in the edit and mix tabs. The MIDI learn in the “MAP” tab is global, meaning that notes are mapped before they hit SSD5. Thus, these changes do not save per kit, for saved presets, you will have to reload them each time you load a new kit. This is good for making maps for MIDI controllers/ E-Kit’s as mapping isn’t tied to a kit, and users can set a default mapping preset, to make for ease of use when switching kits and using a MIDI device.

On the other hand, MIDI learn in the edit/mix tab is not global, and the changes you make save per kit. In the sense of you were to make a new assignment in the edit/mix page, then save your kit. When re-loading your kit, this change will be recalled. The MIDI learn in the edit/mix tab is used for stacking the OG-One shots on existing snares, and un-mapping stacked articulation. It can also be used to use multiple snares and cymbals, and assign them to different MIDI notes, so you can play different snares and cymbals and different times, and on different pads if you have an e-kit.

I’m gonna leave it at that. Make up your own mind. Rest assured, I’m not super happy.

Brutal facts after leaving Facebook

After a few months without Facebook and some new releases, the result is disastrous when it comes to marketing my music. I usually sold a few hundred copies at Bandcamp in the first few days after new music was released. There is absolutely no comparison to that now, I am far from it, to put it mildly.

I had the most visitors to my website through Facebook, and most of the buyers of my music came through Facebook. Twitter absolutely cannot close this gap. Where Facebook was responsible for 80% influx, Twitter is only 10%. Neither my own website nor any social network can compensate for this.

These are facts and they bother me massively. I hate Facebook, think it’s wrong, harmful, and also criminal. My dilemma is quite big, accordingly.

I currently have to put up with the question of whether I can afford the absence of Facebook as someone who wants to make money with music (not necessarily, but want to). I am very busy in the studio and have lots of releases planned. I have never been more creative than now, and it hurts me that things are going down on the business side of things… just because of the fact that I left Facebook.

It would be very nice if you would support me if you like what I do. You can either buy my music on Bandcamp, stream it on Spotify or Apple Music or donate something. I don’t want gifts, you know that I always give more than I ask back. 😉

Thank you very much!

Es wäre schön, wenn das jeder lesen würde | It would be nice if everyone read that

(English version below this German one)

Was denkt ihr dazu? Falls das so ist, wo liege ich grundlegend falsch? Was mache ich falsch?

We recently had visitors, a couple, we know her for a long time, he is her new partner. I have usually followed the principle of not talking about politics or religion for a few years, based on experience. Well… shit hit the fan it did happen. I didn’t start it, but somehow I was suddenly in the middle of it.

For me, the German AfD party is congruently comparable to the American alt-right movement (and the Trump-turned Republican party) and many other right-wing movements around the world. That’s a sad trend that we have to notice but don’t have to accept.

Like presumably many people with whom I surround myself, who also see themselves left / green / progressive in the political spectrum, I have previously assumed that you can convince any reasonably intelligent person with clear facts, if presented undeniably and with clear evidence.

I burned my hands properly on the stove (and actually knew better before). 😞 What do you say to someone who rejects clear evidence and still believes in conspiracy theories? Right, that’s not going well. I think we can agree that we think such a person is an idiot. And no, I didn’t tell him that.

I’ll make it short: a cozy evening turned into a disaster, because at a certain point I couldn’t bear the bullshit anymore. I can take a lot of bullshit calmly, but not when it comes to people I know and who suffer from this nonsense. Then that’s too much. My fuse has blown.

I spent days, and still today, thinking about how to pick up someone who got lost. At which junction did he lose his way, and why? Why can’t such a person accept clear facts and continue to believe and spread any nonsense? I refuse to assume that these are “bad people” — at least not worse than the general average — who have suddenly become right-wing / xenophobic.

So far, I have no ultimate answer, just a guess: simple answers are simple. Obvious. Comfortable. People are lazy. People gravitate towards cardboard figures like Trump because he presents simple answers, no matter how false they are.

That reminds me of:

“Conspiracy theory is the ultimate refuge for the powerless. If you cannot control your own life, it must be some great force that controls the world” – Roger Cohen, New York Times

I’d be really (!) very happy if someone could say more about this. Here in the comments. I ask you for it. What do you think? If so, where am I fundamentally wrong? What am I doing wrong?

I’ve presented this story and my thoughts in extremely abbreviated form. Please, consider this when you answer.

This is from a current article from CNN, but only the core narrative that I consider fundamental. That’s what Federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson said:

“Those are facts. Those are not alleged facts, those are not alternative facts, or a narrative created by the media.”

“This deliberate effort to obscure the facts, this disregard for the truth undermines our political discourse and it affects our policy-making. If people don’t have the facts, democracy doesn’t work.”

TRUMPERLATIVES

Check this out: TRUMPERLATIVES

I set up this tumblr blog — out of fun — a few months ago to take Trump’s use of language ad absurdum (he mostly uses superlatives, I call them “Trumperlatives”). His superlative-soaked tweets get auto-posted on this blog. Which is almost every single tweet he posts.

The blog has 1,200 followers, with about 30 daily added. None of the 1,200 people understand the meaning of the blog, but alarmingly, all 1,200 think the blog would exist to honor Trump. The tagline even says:

A very good blog honoring the terrific and most amazing superlatives (that God has ever created) tweeted by Donald Trump in an absolute tremendous way. You have never seen anything like this before. It’s great!

But you still don’t get it, or anything, probably. Have you found your dick this morning?

To all 1,200 and following: you are wrong. I make fun of “your president,” and thus a little bit of his electorate, you. You don’t realize that. Your dumbness is hard to put into words.

12 Things You Should Never Say To a Musician

  1. So Are You Trying To Be A Musician

I am a musician. Not trying. Trying to be a musician is watching the first YouTube video on how to hold a guitar. Not what I have done for the past 15 years. That is BEING a musician.

  2. You Sound Like…

I know you’re trying to be nice by putting me in good company, but musicians want to feel original. We don’t want to hear we sound like everyone else. That we’re unoriginal. It’s fine for you to sell your friends on listening to someone new by comparing them to well known artists, but when talking to a musician, the best compliment is “you sound like YOU and it’s awesome.” Unless you’re talking to a pop producer, then yeah, “it sounds like Katy Perry” is probably the best compliment you could give.

  3. You Should Try Out For American Idol

    I will slap you.

  4. When Am I Going To Hear You On The Radio?

When your radio plays better shit.

  5. You Should Be On The Voice

Because that’s a career builder. Right Jermaine?

  6. You Must Love Karaoke

No, actually, I hate karaoke because I have to listen to you sing.

  7. Can I Get On The List? Plus 1?

You don’t have $10 to support my music, but you have $50 for the round of shots you just bought everyone?

  8. What’s Your Real Job?

It’s this little field called music. It’s way more real than those TPS reports you put together for the Bobs.

  9. What’s Your Backup Plan

    What’s yours?

  10. It Will Be Great Exposure

Meaning, it doesn’t pay. No thanks.

  11. I Have A Great Idea For A Song

And I have a great idea on how you can fix my faucet better. But let’s keep these things to ourselves.

  12. Free Bird

That stopped being funny in ’97.

Apple iPhone 6 & iOS 8 Fails: A Chronology

  1. U2 album stunt becomes a cake flying back into U2’s and Apple’s faces.
  2. iPhone 6 Plus — a $1000 device — bends (too) easily.
  3. iOS 8.0.1 update gets pulled back after release because of serious bugs.

To be expected next: free iPhone 6 Plus case that protects the phone from bending, or a new built of the device with another material than aluminium (or another aluminium).

This post gets updated whenever new things happen. Shouldn’t take long.

(Not mentioned here: #AntennaGate and #MapsGate of previous i-devives and OS’s)

Bendgate: Apple iPhone 6 Plus not a Hipster phone

Bend-gate: Apple iPhone 6 Plus found bending in pants pockets. Obviously, the new iPhone 6 Plus is not a Hipster phone, not made for tight pants.

I’m sure, those are the reasons (when you ask Apple fan-boys or Apple itself), and all of this is easily avoidable:

  • You’re sitting wrong.*
  • You wear the wrong pants.*
  • You enjoy the wrong activities.
  • It’s not a bug, it’s a feature: the bent phone.
  • Putting a smartphone in your pocket is irresponsible and reckless abuse.*
  • It happens to all smartphone of that size and an aluminium body.*
  • That’s what you get for carrying around a phone of that size. Get a purse or a murse to solve your problems.*
  • It only bends when only a nominal amount of force is applied.*

*Actual real comments read on the web.

Feel free to add your reasons, explanations, excuses in the comments below.

Apple has been contacted for comment. I’m sure they’ll come up with an amazing, awesome, incredible, fantastic and ground-breaking excuse. 😀
