JBL PRX One portable line array: Premium specs, features and price

JBL wades into the portable line array PA sector with the premium-priced JBL PRX One. If you value portability, sound quality and class-leading specs and you have deep pockets, then this could be the PA for you.

JBL PRX One

JBL is one of the oldest brand names in the “sound reinforcement” industry; JBL’s roots date back to the 1940s and you’ll find its products inexorably linked with the advent of PA systems. Undoubtedly it’s a big-hitting brand, so when you hear JBL is releasing a new line of PA speakers, it’s big news for us here at Gearnews.

Without a doubt, the release of the JBL PRX One cements the impression that we’re in the age of the portable line array PA system. It’s a concept you’ll have first seen in the Bose L1 portable column system, which is undoubtedly the main competitor to the JBL PRX One.

The concept is the same and both manufacturers offer a lightweight portable PA system you can chuck in the boot of your hatchback. At around 30 kgs you can carry the whole system yourself. When you get to your gig, simply plug in the upper array column to the subwoofer base station and plug in your sources. Voila! A self-contained PA that offers superb sound dispersal throughout the venue.

Class-Leading Specs

You’ll find a seriously impressive spec sheet accompanying the JBL PRX One. But it’s also a class-leading price, so you’d hope that for the money, it out-performs the competition! I have to say that reading through the specs, the hefty price-tag may well be justified. Here are a few stand-out specs and features:

  • 130db Max SPL
  • 40-20kHz (-3db)
  • 1000W RMS
  • 7 Channel Soundcraft-Designed Digital Mixer
  • Onboard dbx and Lexicon effects
  • Bluetooth connectivity and app control

Taking a look through JBLs press release, I’m impressed with their emphasis on the quality of the loudspeaker drivers themselves. JBL go to great lengths to emphasise in particular, that they use minimal DSP to correct for driver deficiencies. That should translate to a natural-sounding PA rig that will crank loud and fatigue-free for long periods.

The JBL PRX One is a premium product with premium specs and that obviously comes with a premium price. I suspect that translates to a truly first-class experience though, which never comes cheap!
