Low Wave Studios offers Track24, a free analog tape saturation effect in VST3 and AU plugin formats for Windows and macOS. According to the developer, Track24 isn’t a straightforward tape emulation. This week, check out these awesome freebies: a subtractive synth for 808-style sub basses, an experimental reverb and an update for one of the best free Pultec emulations. Here’s HUM808, Yoin Reverberator and Rare.
Looking for more free plug-ins? Our archive has got you covered!
Callybeat’s first free plug-in HUM808 is a subtractive synthesizer designed for booming, 808-style sub basses. It’s got four oscillators with 225 waveforms, waveform drawing and 12 voices of polyphony. You can shape the sound with 5 types of filters, a bunch of ADSR envelopes and a couple of LFOs. There’s also a 4-band parametric EQ and a spectrum analyzer, which will come in handy when you’re dealing with those low, low frequencies.
Another new developer, another interesting first project. Yoin Reverberator by Owl O’Lantern is a reverb, but it doesn’t have any of the usual controls like size, time and pre-delay. Instead, it lets you adjust things like speed and depth (like a modulation effect), tightness, sparkle, saturation and crush. Its inventor says that Yoin is perfect for “turning clean guitar sounds into sad boy music”, and that it also works well on vocals. Sounds like a winner!
Yoin Reverberator is available for macOS (AU) and Windows (VST3).
After two new kids on the block, it’s time for a familiar name. Analog Obsession has been busy updating his plug-ins with oversampling and other new features. Now his Pultec emulation Rare is getting the same treatment in collaboration with Bedroom Producers Blog. The EQ, which features an extra pre-EQ gain stage, now lets you switch on 4x oversampling by clicking on the Analog Obsession logo. Rare has also received an optimized circuit emulation and support for macOS Big Sur.
Rare is available for macOS 10.9–11.X (VST, VST3, AU) and Windows 7–10 (VST, VST3)
Inphonik releases PCM2612 Retro Decimator Unit, a freeware bitcrusher effect in VST, AU, AAX, and Rack Extension formats. The plugin is also available for iPad and iPhone devices. PCM2612 Retro Decimator Unit is a free bitcrusher effect. It is based on Inphonik’s previously released RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer plugin, which emulates the Sega Genesis sound […]
Until March 31, 2021, you can download the IK Multimedia Amplitube 5 Soldano SLO-100 Head for free! This amazing freebie is certainly worth checking out and brings that delicious boutique amp tone to your virtual guitar rig. Read on below on how to get your free copy.
IK Multimedia Soldano SLO-100 – free until March 31, 2021
To access the emulation of this high-gain tube amp, you will need the free Custom Shop version of IK’s AmpliTube 5, which comes with 39 emulations of pedals, amps, cabinets, microphones and effect racks. So if you already have AmpliTube 5 Custom Shop installed, all you have to do is start the Restore My Purchases tool . After the update, you will be the new owner of the Soldano SLO-100.
The Soldano SLO-100 (Super Lead Overdrive) is based on a design that has remained virtually unchanged for over 20 years and is one of the most popular amps in the world. You get separate controls for the preamp and the master volume, plus a control for presence and a 3-band EQ. I have been using it for a while and it sounds great. It has lots of very useable tones and is pretty dynamic, so perfect for tracking guitars in your DAW setup.
The company is currently celebrating the success of its amp simulation, which was launched in 2002 and now has over four million registered users on Windows, macOS and iOS. This virtual amp head is the first of the freebies, and more artist presets will follow in the coming weeks. Starting from March 2, 2021, every week you can download a different preset from Joe Satriani, Gus G, Marty Friedman and Slash.
Specification and price
AmpliTube 5 Custom Shop runs on macOS (10.10 or newer) and Windows (7 or newer) as a VST, AU and AAX plug-in formats, as well as standalone. The download is free of charge, 39 emulations are already included. The other amps, pedals and effects must be activated for a fee.
We stumbled upon two excellent freebies for Ableton Live Suite or Live with Max for Live users. You can now download two new Max for Live Devices – Swarmalators T and Cellular Degradation – for free! Both are made by Max developer Dillon Bastan.
Max for Live developer Dillon Bastan contributed six very interesting effects and instruments for sound designers to the recently releasedAbleton Live 11package. He has now expanded his portfolio with a new synthesizer and effect that you can download from his site for free. Pretty cool!
Swarmalators T and Cellular Degradation
Swarmalators T is a synthesizer based on a “Swarmalators” model. This type of sound generation is quite complex (more information can be found here). It employs synchronised dynamic movement of a ‘swarm’ of oscillators which generates a very lively sound, with lots of dynamics. A very useful tool if you’re into sound design. The graphic design is also very nice.
Cellular Degradation, as the name suggests, is an audio degrader with a life of its own. The idea behind it is predictably complex – it’s about the interplay of cellular automation and a polyphonic tone generator, creating interesting noises for experimental musicians. Bastan explains the procedure very clearly in one of the videos below.
Prices and dates
You can download the Swarmalators T and Cellular Degradation from the developer’s Gumroad page in the link below. Note that the price is determined by you, so if you choose to, you can download them for free. But if you decide to support the developer, it would mean he can invest more of his time in further creations. The Max for Live Devices require an installed Ableton Live version 10 (or higher) and Max for Live (which is included in Ableton Live Suite).
Reason brings the fun to FM Synthesis with the colourful Algoritm FM and plays with 9 operators, filters and completely free routing.
The idea was to make Algoritm FM (apparently not a typo) as accessible and easy-to-use as possible which is no mean feat with FM synthesis. The first thing they did was to remove the operator algorithms and leave the routing completely open and free. Once that freedom was achieved Algoritm FM became quite unique and exciting – or so they say.
What we have are 9 operator slots that can be connected together however you wish. You’d expect these slots to be filled with classic FM oscillators but they can also house wavetable oscillators, filters and shapers. There are 3 LFOs and a couple of “Curves” which are a bit like envelopes only more complex.
While it’s completely capable of coming up with regular FM sounds it’s also free from those assumptions and can hybrid itself into all sorts of tones and possibilities. It has a randomisation engine to get things moving, a unison mode and some reverb and delay effects.
Algoritm FM looks pretty fabulous to me. I like the routing panel and how easy the very visual interface makes everything. While it’s a great place for exploration FM often needs a bit of instruction regardless of how simple the interface is. Reason has provided a decent tutorial video where their man Ryan takes us through what we need to know – good stuff.
Algoritm FM is available now as a Rack Extension for £99 or free as part of the Reason+ subscription.
IK Multimedia offers the officially certified Soldano SLO-100 head model free to all AmpliTube 5 users (including the free AmpliTube 5 CS). Analog Obsession released the Rare “BPB Edition” passive equalizer plugin with a new oversampling feature and macOS Big Sur compatibility.
